    Surviving emotional upheavals without binging

Just had my first experience of real emotions without turning immediately to bingeing. I had a foster kitten for the past month a fellow found in a drain pipe next to a busy highway, and have been sqeezing him, teaching him stuff, taking him to the vet for 4 weeks and this is his first week up for adoption. My daughter was taking her 5 fosters in and kindly took him too and I cried and hated to let him go even though I know he may find a wonderful new home. Sounds melodramatic but learning to deal honestly with feelings without stuffing them with food is important. I'm only on Day 4 of abstinence but already feel better thanks to all the great information and advice on this website and also the american diabetes association website. thanks for listening, I know this is silly compared to the real stuff we have to deal with in life, but what makes us cry, can make us eat. And right now I'm not eating.

    Dear nevertoolate,

No, I don't think it's silly at ALL! My sister-in-law takes in foster kittens and I have never known how she could do it... I would get so attached to them, I'd never be able to let them go! I truly do admire you for the tremendous service you give to these kittens and their future owners.

Feeling the feelings of the grief that you did, and not picking up s/f/w over it is a HUGE thing! I hope, even though it was a painful thing you went through, that you also felt very proud of yourself for not bingeing... you sure deserve to feel proud, nevertoolate! In abstinence, there's always a first time we do something without bingeing (the first birthday without cake, the first Thanksgiving, the first anniversary being abstinent of someone's death, etc.) and now you have had this "first time". You are stronger today than you were the day before that, for having gone through this. Good for you!

    Hi nevertoolate,
Something that I learned after a while in the program was that we are allowed to eat 2 t. ground flax seed per day and that helps with that particular problem! You can put it on your grain in the morning. I usually use it with my metabolic instead because I wanted that to be more substantial, so I either add it to my milk/yogurt or just eat it.

The other thing I learned from a nutritionist was that dairy might be making me feel constipated. I don't really know if it is true or not but I did switch to soymilk on her advice. However, I use dairy when I can't get the soymilk (when I travel), and I do not always get constipated so who knows? your mileage may vary.

    Best of luck,

    Hi nevertoolate,
You definitely will find it in any health food store; it is a very common thing people use for getting Omega-3 oils into their diet and is considered very healthy. You need to grind it before you eat it--the seeds are not digestible unless ground, so they will pass right through your system. You can grind with mortal and pestle or in a blender. Flax seed, whether whole or ground, should be stored in the fridge or freezer. You can buy it pre-ground as well which is how I started but then just recently started grinding it myself.

    All best,

Yes, you can mix it right in with your hot cereal... that's what I do. I had used the ground flaxseed, but personally prefer the whole flaxseed (and it works great in my case).

    Thanks for your questions, nevertoolate.
