    Rye flakes and hot dogs

    Hey,
I have a couple questions. I got some rye flakes -the only ingredient is rye, they look like oats, there's no sugar in them, and they take 3 minutes to boil. Is this an ok form of rye?
Also, I think we're only supposed to have one tablespoon of spices a day -do spices in foods count? Like I got hot dogs, and in the ingredients it says they have less than 2% of sea salt -is this ok?
    Thank you!

Yes, rye flakes are fine. The spices in your hot dogs don't count toward the daily amount, which is one TEASPOON for spices, and two TABLESPOONS for condiments. Here's what it says in FAA's Guide to Abstinence:

"Any spice or sauce that issugar-free, alcohol-free or wheat-free including, but not limited to, mustard, tamari, salsa, non-fat yogurt, lemon juice, etc. Limit spice and condiment use to the levels recommended in recipes or no more than 1 teaspoon per day of any one spice and no more than two tablespoons per day of any one sauce."

Oh great, ok thank you! So for one day we should not eat more than one teaspoon of spice? As in, of all the different spices we use, in total they should not be more than a teaspoon? Or you can have say one teaspoon cinnamon and one teaspoon of sea salt, so then two teaspoons a day of spice?

    Hi Kerri,
You may find different practices by different sponsors. My sponsor told me not to worry about measuring anything that I wouldn't eat as a food. So I don't measure or report any spices or condiments like mustard, braggs and lemon juice, but I do measure and report salsa or yogurt if I use them as a condiment.

Part of this program is learning to be sane with food so don't drive yourself crazy! If spices were a binge food for you or a particular spice is a trigger, then certainly you need to manage that one carefully with a sponsor, either omitting it, measuring or something.

    Sincerely,
    Ora food addict CO

That's correct in my understanding... one teaspoon for each individual spice. The idea behind it is that some people do go way overboard on particular spices (salt, for instance) and this gives a guideline for what would be a "reasonable" amount. Some of us food addicts had gone so deeply into the disease that we no longer had an idea of what "reasonable" looked like anymore.

oragold is very right about different sponsors having different ideas about some things relating to the food plan. What I'd suggest is getting the best recommendations you can from Online Support and from your Outreach phone calls while you're looking for your sponsor, and once you have her, you'd want to follow what she recommends for you based on her experience with the food plan.

    Best wishes, kerri!
