How do vegetarians handle the faa food plan?

I was wondering how vegetarians handle the food plan, what kind of adjustments they make, what they use for protein? Do vegetarians tend to eat sugary stuff? Seems they would be more health conscious than a lot of us...

    Hi Marilyn,

I can assure you that there are alot of unhealthy vegetarians out there. Infact as a vegetarian its even harder to make a diet balanced as not all protein sources contain all the essential amino acids.

I have not eaten meat for 21 years. To get protein I eat nuts, seeds, tofu, soya milk, eggs, fish, lentils, chickpeas, quinoa. There is protein in vegetables believe it or not!

I was having porridge with soya milk, seeds and banana for breakfast. Salad with fish for lunch and veggies with tofu for dinner as an example. I have found though that oats and banana are trigger foods for me so I tried quinoa with nuts and seeds for breakfast today and actually quite liked it.

Hi, Debbie, interesting post. Is there any fish that doesn't taste fishy? I like quinoa now, what are lentils and how do you eat them? Tofu scares me!

    hello nevertoolate

I love fish but I do not like fishy tasting fish I use lemon on my fish it does wonders, I eat a lot of haddock, shrimp, crab. I also enjoy clams & oysters scallops they too are yummy...My favorites are the white ones from the ocean. I found them to be less fishy tasting!

Lentils are great mixed with quiona or rice even barley, My favorite type of lentil is the pardina lentil...they keep there shape the best after cooking. They are actually beans or peas.Use as a starchy veggie 1/2 cup or as a protein 1 cup!
found this information on line about lentils,
The lentil is a cousin of the bean, and both are a part of the legume family. All legumes are seeds that grow within pods. Lentils are shaped like a lens. In fact, lens is the Latin word for lentil. The size and appearance of lentils varies depending on the variety. The outer seed coat can be mottled or speckled and ranges in color from reddish-brown to grayish-brown to green. The inner coat, or cotyledon, can be red or yellow.

There are actually quite a few vegetarian options on the FAA food plan:

    http://www.foodaddictsanonymous.org/faa-food-plan

For example: tempeh, tofu, and all sorts of beans (lentils, garbanzo beans, black beans, etc). If one is not a strict vegetarian, there are is also cottage cheese and eggs as an option.

Hope this helps and have a wonderful abstinent day today.

There is a sample Vegetarian menu plan for a whole week in the FAA Annual Menu Planner & Journal (on page 6), which can be purchased from the FAA store:

What's nice about the Menu Planner is that you can see what you've planned for the whole week on one page... it does make planning much easier than writing my daily food plan down in a notebook day by day, I found. The Journal part is nice too; it helps me keep track of when I've gone to a meeting, or called an FAA member or my sponsor, etc. When I look at the whole week and see that I've not done some particular recovery action for a few days, it's a good impetus to get going on that action!
