Thread: Yogurt

    Yogurt

The only dairy on the list that I think I would even like is milk...I am worried that I am going to get very sick of drinking milk. I enjoy milk, cheese, and yogurt but cheese is not on the list and of course, yogurt will have some sort of sugar. What do people add to plain yogurt to make it taste good. I mean, to me...plain yogurt is just ewwwww for real. And why is cheese not on the list. It doesn't have sugar, flour, or wheat does it? I surely didn't think so :)

    Be blessed,
    Dawn

    Hi Dawn,

Plain yogurt has naturally occurring sugar in it, but no added sugar or form of sugar. Dannon yogurt is one brand I know of that is safe for food addicts, and I've heard that Trader Joe's plain yogurt is also fine.

This is from the Guide to Abstinence & suggested FAA food plan page on the FAA website:

    2. Look for hidden or additional names of sugar, flour and wheat in the "Ingredient" section for the label on all packaged or canned foods, drinks marinades, dressings, and spices, including salt. Do not confuse this with the "Nutrition Facts" section, which may list naturally occurring sugar. For example, the label on a can of tomato paste may list tomatoes as the only ingredient and yet under the "Nutrition Facts" section it may list 3 grams of sugar. The 3 grams of sugar naturally occur in the tomatoes. Check all labels regularly as manufacturers often alter ingredients.
I recommend reading the Guide to Abstinence and food plan often in the early days of your recovery, as there's quite a lot of information to take in:

There's also a post here in Online Support that explains why cheese, which is called a "gray food" in FAA, isn't on the food plan:

Thanks for your question, Dawn. Keep coming, keep sharing!

I eat greek yogurt. I like the thickness and texture of it far better than any of the regular non or low fats out there. After four years of eating no flour and no sugar in my previous program, I can't stand the taste of anything artificial. I have come to love the freshness of my morning yogurt. I never thought that I would but I do. I promise, promise promise!!!!

Step three, as long as it doesn't have additives other than perhaps the live bacterial cultures, it's okay, isn't it?

Another question, if I may...Sorry for hijacking the thread Dawn..

How does FAA look at mixing things like berries and yogurt? I have been mixing the two together.

    Hi betsyb,
Yes, the Greek yogurt is fine. And mixing yogurt and berries is also fine for your dairy and fruit. When they were in season, I'd microwave strawberries for 2-1/2 to 3 minutes (made sure the bowl was big enough, because it tended to boil over if I used a cereal bowl), and then stirred in a cup of yogurt. This also worked with blueberries, and made a nice Metabolic Adjustment.

Thanks for all the ideas later. I went a little crazy yesterday and my fear took over and I made some bad decisions but I am back on track this morning and I am going to try some yogurt mixed with strawberries today! I think it sounds yummy!

    Hi Dawn,
Glad you didn't get so discouraged you decided to forget about things. That's something many of us have done in the past, especially if perfectionism is a problem. We'll be "perfect" for a while (as long as we can), and then slip up. It can be the most minor of slip ups, but it's no longer perfect, which means we can't do it! So off we go (for those of us like that), and that's the end of our program and abstinence.

What I learned is that yes, I need to let go of sugar, flour & wheat, and I'll never be able to take it back. My body is bio-chemically made up so that those substances cause an addictive response, and my body will never change... it just won't! BUT... I don't have to give them up for "forever". Especially in the beginning, that was too much for me to contemplate. But I can, with my Higher Power's help, not eat s/f/w JUST FOR TODAY. And If I'm tempted, I can call my sponsor or another FAA member, write about it, go to an FAA meeting, get away from the food that's tempting me, etc. I've learned many things in FAA that I can do.

Just for today, I don't HAVE to pick up, even if I want to! What a freedom!

Please keep coming and sharing, Dawn. You're doing great as you are in the process of achieving your abstinence.

HA! Yep...the strawberries definitely boil over in a cereal bowl....LMBO! I had quite the mess in my microwave BUT I got a bigger bowl and tried again. I guess I should have listened to your warning :)

I got me some Dannon Oikios Green NonFat Yogurt and mixed it with one cup of heated-up-in-the-microwave strawberries and it was reallly good! Not as good as the mint chocolate chip yogurt I used to eat....LOL! But it was really good. I am going to try some other fruits also. It is a yummy change to just what I have been doing....just drinking a glass of milk. Though it is kind of funny how I am grown to enjoy milk. I mean, I hated the stuff before I started this eating plan. I am really starting to enjoy this. I got my abstinence cook book also....going to look though that today. Good times!

    Be blessed, Dawn

    FAA Cookbook

Dawn, The cookbook is great, and there are also some good abstinent recipes in the Abstinent Recipes forum, here in Online Support. Friday nights at 6:00PM EST is a recipe phone meeting, where FAA members come and share their abstinent recipes. You might enjoy that meeting too.
