    Limited cooking facilities

    Hi

I am keen to start incorporating the FAA way of eating into my lifestyle.

I have VERY limited cooking facilities (basically - microwave only during the week).

One thing I would like to start doing is having buckwheat porridge.

Can I make this with skimmed milk in the microwave?

    cooking buckwheat

I have a box of the creamy buckwheat and it does not have directions for cooking in the microwave. I would guess that it needs to be cooked on top of the stove (or one of those portable burners) in a very large pot because it tends to run over. I've cooked the long cooking rolled oats with milk in the microwave and actually I prefer to heat the water first in the microwave to mix the powdered milk and then cook the rolled oats separately - put in two servings of the milk for the dairy and protein and added an orange which doesn't need to be refrigerated.

The rice cakes and puffed cereals are other choices. The 3 rice cakes can be used with a cup of refried beans for a quick meal (and I think that El Paso brand is clean, but be sure to check the label ingredients).

I've used canned meats (chicken, tuna and salmon), canned veg (green beans & wax beans and rinsed off the salt - too much salt for food addicts, carrots, lima beans, cannelloni beans, kidney beans, no sugar added corn, beets, mixed greens, mushrooms, turnips w/ turnips greens) and the pineapple canned in it's own juice (no concentrated juices which acts like sugar for us food addicts) apple sauce with no sugar added in the jars.

    Hi Suzie Q

You can steam fresh veg in the microwave. Just put a little boiling water in a bowl with the veg and put it on for 5 minutes. Test at that point and if more time is needed, set it for a couple of minutes at a time, testing in between.

(I was in bed and breakfast accommodation with my two children and cooked whole meals from fresh ingredients with nothing but a microwave.)

    All the best

You can go for pouch food or frozen products... I am sure that would need the minimum cooking facilities!!

Yes, you sure can, I had it today 1/4 cup buckwheat dry, 1/4 skim milk and 3/4 cup of water, zap it for 5 to 6 mins on high setting, it is yummo...I have just started using buckwheat in my food plan, I used to alternate between steel cut oats or corn grits for breakfast some times quinoa or barley...another wonderful cooking tool is an electric rice cooker, get your self a small one, it make cooking grains so easy, just add one cup dry grain and 2 cups of water this method works for brown rice, barley, & quinoa it may work for other grains as well, for steel cut oats use 1/2 dry grain and 2 cups water...the FAA food plan and guide to abstinence are one of our many wonderful tools!! ***** another thing I found out is Buckwheat is being studied for use in treating Type II diabetes. I thought that was cool!
