Scared to let go of my sugar / drug

    Hi all,
I have been to several FAA meetings and am slowly getting ready to let go of my drug. BUT I AM SO SCARED! I am also part of another 12 step program so I know I should think of it as one day at a time - but I sitting here with my daily chocolate bar (sorry if not supposed to say that here - will learn!) thinking of throwing it in the garbage - but soooo scared by the mere thought of not having it handy tomorrow at work!

Any suggestions how to dare take this step?!

    thanks! monsun from Sweden

    Jumping off the cliff

    Hi all,
When I read my own thread I got scared - I realized how deep into my addiction I am - being scared of letting go of some chocolate - so I just have threwn away everyting in my fridge with sugar in it as well as my daily chocolate bar.
Just for today no sugar, wheat or flour

Congratulations on throwing the chocolate away, Monsun. That is how it happened for me, too. I went to a phone meeting and got the courage to tell them I was still drinking diet soda and a couple of other things that were not on the food plan. This was after I had started the food plan "to the best of my ability". But telling on myself like that was so helpful. After I spoke, another member shared about how she had needed to "completely" surrender when she came to FAA. When I heard that, I realized I had not COMPLETELY surrendered. There was still one thing (sugar free drinks) I thought to myself, "No! I can't get rid of THAT!" But I kept coming and finally realized that the people I heard on the meetings whose recovery I admired WERE following the food plan - not just somewhat, or to the best of their ability - but there were simply following it. I wanted what they had, so after I got the courage to speak up at that meeting that night, I threw all the soda away!

I too am in another 12 Step program have many years of sobriety. Food addiction has been a whole other story, though - not quite the same experience as being in other 12 Step programs, is it?! Keep coming, Monsun. Recovery is available. As it says in FAA's literature:

Diets became our Higher Power, only to fail us again and again....With abstinence from sugar, flour, wheat and other high carbohydrate foods, we can find hope to live our lives. Our Higher Power leads us forward with love to freedom and a happy, useful life. Abstinence opens the door and by working the Twelve Steps we can recover from this disease.

Scared but ready to get started

I am new and just joined this morning! Went to my first phone meeting this morning and this feels like the right place for me! I am excited to feel better but scared that I won't be able to stick with it. I ordered the books and am waiting for them to come in the mail. I don't really want to wait until I get them to start. Do I need to wait until I get a sponser?

Welcome EmmieAnne! Congratulations for getting started by going to your first phone meeting. Please let the fearful thoughts about not being able to stick with it go. In FAA, we work the program One Day at a Time, so you only have to think about abstinence for this one day, not for the long run. Some members get started by focusing only on one meal at a time. Whichever way works for you, go for it!

No, you don't have to wait to get a sponsor. One suggestion is to start making phone calls to FAA members that you hear at the phone meetings. Phone numbers are given in the last five minutes of the meeting so be sure to start a phone list for yourself. By making one-on-one phone calls, you will get to know people a little better and may find your sponsor that way.

    Good luck, EmmieAnne!
